The other most important doctrine is that
of Karma. The Buddhist believes as well
as the Social Philosopher, that each genera-
tion reaps as the preceding generation has
sown before it. We inherit the consequences
of the virtues and sins of the preceding ages,
in the same way as our children and grand-
children would become heir to our legacy.
The life of a man is determined by his
‘Karma’ in a previous birth, but it is not
Karma alone that decides whether a man
shall be rich or poor, virtuous, or immoral,
learned or illiterate, happy or miserable. The
potent hand of the Creator has much to do
in that direction ; and we should not expect
