sent at his father’s execution. The dying
father looked towards his son, and his last words
were, “ Not by hatred, my dear Digham, is ha-
tred appeased. ” “By love my dear
Digham hatred is appeased.”
And young Digham, 0 Bhikshus 1 wan-
dered in the forest hopelessly crying and mourn-
ing his lot. At last he resolved to take em-
ployment as an elephant trainer in the royal
stables. One day he arose early in the morn-
ing and sang a mournful song, his heart being
full of grief for his deceased parents. His
beautiful voice attracted the notice of the king
who called him, and gave him an employment
as his personal attendant.
It happened, not long after, that the king
went a hunting with the young Digham ; and
the latter who was always seeking for an oppor-
tunity to avenge his parents’ murder so drove
the royal chariot, “ that the hosts went one way
and the king’s chariot went another way.” At
last the king began to feel the fatigue of the jour-
ney, and laying his head on the lap of Digham
