not Greek. OlXcopos is commonly regarded as the transliteration of the Hebrew
D^iy ('o/dm), 'eternity,'though Gruppe Cult. Myth, orient. Ret. i. 514 (cp. i. 349,
642) says : 'Dies Wesen war hdchst wahrscheinlich zweigeschlechtig gedacht, da
es mit sich selbst den Xovacopos erzeugt... Demnach scheint es mir (trotz der von
Schuster de vet. Orph. theog. ind. atq. or. S. 98. Anm. 1 citirten Kabbalastelle) zwei-
fellos, dass OvXcopos nicht... von th]) " E wigkeit,' sondern von D^y " Geschlechts-
trieb empfinden " abgeleitet ist.' Mr N. McLean, to whom I have referred
the point, tells me (Sept. 13, 1916) that O&Xcopos might perhaps be connected with
D^-1X (iilam), 'the front, that which is first,' but is more probably the Grecised
form of D^iy (' d/d?n), 'eternity.' Similarly Count Baudissin sees in 'OvXcopos
(wohl cb')]})' 'Den Gott der Vorzeit' (W. W. Baudissin Adonis und Esmun
Leipzig 1911 pp. 503 and 488). Cp. Gen. 21. 33 'And Abraham planted a
tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the
Everlasting God' with J. Skinner's note ad loc: l'El lO/dm] presumably the
pre-Israelite name of the local numen, here identified with Yahwe ' etc. Xovacopos,
'the Opener,' remains obscure. H. Ewald ' Tiber die phonikischen Ansichten
