issue, the Folia Historiae Artium has been financed
by the Lanckoroński of Brzezie Foundation, al-
though on several earlier occasions Karolina
Lanckorońska had supported this publication from
her private means. Her importance for the Folia was
not limited to such direct activities - it became
prominent also in the permanent care taken by her
of the library in the Institute of History of Art at the
Jagiellonian University, which — for the majority of
authors — constituted the fundamental research
workshop. She also assigned generous grants for
research stays abroad and provided means to pur-
chase photographic and archival materials to satisfy
the publishing needs. In this way Karolina
Lanckorońska became the chief donor, in point of
fact the founder of the Folia, a guarantor of its high
quality in what concerned the content and editorial

form, in the former respect owing to her private
contacts with authors. Thus, in a sense, the Folia
can be acknowledged to have been Her achieve-
ment.

The role played by Karolina Lanckorońska in the
publication of the Folia Historiae Artium foliowed,
quite naturally, from her attitude to national culture
and scholarly actiyities, which she treated as the
highest good. Endowed with exceptional didactic
qualif!cations, from the first years of her teaching
career at the John Casimir University in Lvov, she
considered the education of young scholarly person-
nel to be her most important duty in boosting the
nation’s knowledge and culture. When later on the
yicissitudes prevented her from following this path,
she was able to find other ways of reaching the goals
she had set for herself.
