It is-delivered from Authentic!* Authors, That Cleopatra, Queen Chap. X. -
of Egypt, drank one dissblved at a Supper^of which Draught (he ~'~v~N~'
boasted lhe had a more costly Supper than'ever Antomxis had; the
Value of which Draught then must amount to, according to Bu-
dceus, an Hundred and fifty thousand Aureus, for thus much did
one Supper of Antomus cost him, as related by Pliny, lih. 9. cap. 3 5.
& Macreh. 3. Satumal. c. 2,7. The same Badaus doth also mention
an Vmon of the Bigness of a Filbert, which was .bought in
France sor Three thousand Agrees, and another For Four thou-
sand.
Seliuus, and Scrap Hager Alkali, say that these Stones are cold its Properties,
and dry in the Second Degree, and that they are good against
Syncopes and Cardiacal I'aisions; that they comfort the Spirits,
slop Fluxes of Blood, cure Lienteries and Diarrheas, and that they
are good for the Sight: The sume say Cardanus^ Rulandus, and
Bacaus, in their Books de Gemmis. But the more Mechanical So-
lution of their operating, is ( as all Conchous things do J either by
precipitating the Saline or Acid Particles, or else as all Alkalies do,
by imbibing the same, obtund their Fury by slieathing their (harp
Points, and (0 render them capable of assisting such Diseases.
They are of great Worth for their Sacred Use: St. Auftin in its Digniiy
his Explication of the Pfalms^ speaking of the Twelve Stones men- and Value,
tioned in the Book of the Revelatmis, Rev. 21., 2.1. and of the
Gates of the New Jeritsalem, which were every one of one Pearl;
saith, That the Twelve Apostles are signified by the Twelve Stones,
an J Christ the Spotless Lamb by the Pearl.
Their own Glory, Beauty, and Excellency , surpass their In-
trinsick Worth: If they be of the Weight os Four Grains, they are
worth Three Crowns apiece; so according to their Bigness, Weight,
Roundness, and Fairness, their Price is raised, doubled, or trebled,
according to the following Scale.
