The text of this edition is in Italian, the commentary in Latin. The
well-known work is dealing with music, painting, sculpture, medicine, geometry,
mathematics and optics, brandies of knowledge jointed to architecture generally.
Other chapters deal with: the earliest dwellings of man, various forms of Greek
temples, the Ornaments of capitals, the Doric order &c. &c. Book VIII treats of
hydraulic engineering, of finding of good water, of hot springs, mineral waters,
with an account of the diief medicinal springs of the world. Book IX deals with
astronomy, a chapter with sundials. The last Book (X) deals with ma-
diinery. The first mention of the Camera obscura, usually attributed to
Porta, is found in this work.
The interesting cuts represent a. o. figures of waterwheels, military engines,
and other inventions, including a warship moved not only by sails, but also
by paddles. On 1. XLVI vo. there is a curious orographic map of Italy and
the Alps. There are curious representations of Milan Cathedral, which are impor-
tant as being the earliest engravings of Gothic ardiitecture known.

buildings on columns, in the back-ground a steeple (cf. Passavant V, p. 178, app.).
