THEOLOGY, general [Pius IV. — Raymundus]. 61

Three full-page cuts on 1. LI v, LIIII, and LXV and many small cuts are by Hans B a 1-
d u n g G r i e n, also the large cut on 1. Iv, attributed by Bartsch VII, 254, erroneously to Schauffelein.
The beautiful full-page cut on 1. XXIv is attributed by Dodgson to W ol f T rau t It re-
presents Christ and the Apostles on the way to Gethsemane. “In this woodcut Trant’s characteristic
manner of drawing trees begins to appear. The features of St. Peter and of the apostle behind him,
in profile to r., anticipate certain types in the large woodcut of the Confraternity of St. Ursula, which
I regard as an indisputable work of Traut” (Dodgson I, p, 505, 5).
At the beginning a few small wormholes, some rents in margins skilfully mended, in 1. XXIII
a very small and insignificant hole, with stamps of the British Museum and its bookplate, otherwise
a very fine and clean copy with most brilliant impressions.

Panzer VI, 380, 299. Not in Proctor. Very rare and interesting treatise on the methods of
confessing to be applied to temporal rulers. Its tendency appears from the title which ends as follows:

cultat : iram dei super se prouscat.
The author, a learned monk, who wrote some books against Luther shortly after the publica-

plague in 1523.
