Title and last leaves a little frayed and stained, otherwise good copy of the rare edition of
Gesner’s first attempt at a general bibliography by Frisius. The first, 1548, edition
is much less full and wants whole sections, which were supplied by the “Appendix” bound with the
above copy.

Very rare. The first German edition of this very important description of the
Netherlands. This edition is specially very remarkable for the numerous illustrations and maps. The
first double page map represents the Netherlands, the other represent the territories on both sides ot
the Rhine. The cuts are faithful representations of the various towns and public buildings of Holland.
On p. ccix under the town Haerlem we find an interesting passage with a cut relating to the invention
of Printing.
Very nice and dean copy.

numerous full-page woodcut examples of writing in various
styles and languages, including ciphers and secret writing,
monograms, pictorial rebuses, Greek, Hebrew, Chaldee, Ara-
bic, Cyrillic, etc. There is also a very interesting cut of wri-
ting implements, and printer’s device at end. On verso of title
the portrait of the author. Old limp vellum. 240.—
Brunet IV, col. 314. Very scarce edition of this interesting and finely illustrated calligraphic
work. On f. Ej v we find a curious cut of reversed writing to be red in a mirror. Several of the
cuts are dated 1545, they are the same as in the original edition.
Very good and large copy, slightly brownstained in places.

Panzer IX, 16, 86. Denis, p. 88, 94. First edition of this interesting collection of famous
“public speeches” delivered in high praise of a person or thing. This collection contains the famous
panegyric by the younger Pliny, which is the most celebrated example of a Latin public speech,
which he delivered in the senate (a. D. 100) and which contains an eulogy of Trajan. The other
panegyrics are a. o. by Claudius Mamertinus, Constantius Filius, Nazarius, Ausonius Vassas of
Bordeaux etc.
Name on title, the lower blank margins somewhat waterstained, otherwise a good copy.
