GERMAN WOODCUT BOOKS

57 Boccaccio, Giov. De claris mulieribus. Bern, Mathias Apiarius,
1539- Fol. 8811. Printer’s device on title leaf and the end. With
15 fine woodcuts by the Master I K, 10 of them signed,
1 dated 1.537- Marbled calf, fillet borders on sides, gilt back,
inside dentelles. (Rebacked, bound by Zaehnsdorf.) Frs. 480.—
Brunet I, 990. Deschamps, p. 179. The first book printed at Berne
(Switzerland).
Oneofthe most important examples oftheartofSwiss book-
illustration of that time. The Master I K, who was formely identified
with Jacob Koebel or Jacques Kerver, is one of the best artists of his time, our
book is his chef d’oeuvre. He is possibly identical with Jacob KIauser or
C la user. Of the 15 fine woodcuts we mention the most curious one of Pope
Joan, which is mostly missing.
A good and spotless example of the printing of Apiarius. Rare
like all products of this press. The last 11. somewhat wormed.
See Reproduction, below.

From No. 57-
Chloelia riding across the Tiber. Woodcut by the Master I. K.
(Reduced.)
