76 Abraham ha-Levi ben Eliezer. Collection ot letters. Preceded
by the prophecies of the child prophet Nahman, son of the Rabbi
Pinhas with commentary of Abraham ha-Levi ben Eliezer. Hebrew
Manuscript of the 16th century, written in Spanish-rabbinic
characters and executed in the orient. On paper, in 4to- (7V2 by
53/4 in.), 25 lines. Original binding of brown leather. Frs. 2500. —
A most interesting Hebrew Manuscript of two texts of Abraham ha-Levi
ben Eliezer ha-Zaken.
His collection of letters contained here is of greatest interest. Of great
importance is a letter of more than 40 pages dealing with Luther and the Re-
formation and the Latin translation of the Bible (Vulgata) by Hieronymus. This
is the First Jewish Opinion on Luther. The author regards Lutherism as
the beginning of the redemption of the world, which meaning he tries to make
plausible from passages in the Bible and the Talmud. It is noteworthy that
the author who wrote this letter in Palestine had got an account of Luther and
his doctrines during the latter’s lifetime.
The prophecies of the child prophet Nahman which preceed the above
letters are interpreted by a commentary of Abraham.
The author was a Spanish exile living in Palestine. On being exiled from
Spain, 1492, he lived for a brief period in Egypt and Constantinople. Subsequently
he went to Jerusalem and Safed, where he studied the Cabala.
In his writings we find many highly interesting remarks on the events of
that time in Spain, Portugal and Abysinia. He interprets many verses of Daniel on
various events in Spain, which he regards as punishment for the injustice done
to the Jews by the Spaniards.
The manuscript is, in comparision to Hebrew MSS. in general, rather well
preserved and perfect. It contains several capitals in outline drawing; it is
slightly stained, and the leaves are loose; at the end a few leaves are damaged
with some loss of text.
