Harrisse 76. Denis 111. First Edition of the rare cosmographical and geographical treatise
by the most eminent naturalist of the thirteenth century, Albert von Bollstaedt (1193—
1280), called Albert Magnus. In the 7th chapter on the question whether the earth is inha-
bitable between the Equator and the South Pole, the author emphatically, and contrary to most an-
cient opinions, replies in the affirmative. This has moved the editor, G. Tannstetter,
the famous Professor of Mathematics at Vienna University to a marginal note (1. d 4ro): , Ecce conclu-
dit ultra equinoctialem 50 gradibus terram esse habitabilem, quod V e spu tins superioribus annis
in suis navigationibus invenit et descripsit". This rare Viennese imprint contains many interesting
chapters on the islands, on the three continents etc.
Fine copy, upper margin of title cut rather short without affecting the border.
