345 English Psalm-Tune Book of John Gouldar, 1739. English Manuscript on
paper, 92 11. containing ab. 125 church-tunes in 4 parts. Sm.-4to. Old veil. 120.-
Most interesting handwritten psalmbook, cont. more than 120 country church-tunes, com-
monly sung in English parish-churches and private houses in the 17 th and 18 th century. It
contains compositions in 4 parts, i. e. Cantus, Tenor, Medius and Bassus, from the most emi-
nent musicians of Queen Elisabeth’s time: John Playford, Tho. Ravenscroft, R.
Allison, Ed. Blancks, Tho. Tomkins, Wm. Cobbold, Wm. Cranford, John Milton — the
father of the great poet — Wm. Harrison, J. Farmer, S. Stubbs, M. Cavendish, J. Dowland,
G. Kirby, Tho. Tallis, Ed. Hooper, a. o.
These tunes were composed to promote the practice of psalmody and adapted for the
use of non professional singers. Though collections of this kind of books were published in
very great number, these compilations have become very rare, being used up. Our manuscript
is in very good condition, but for some si. stains and some well-thumbed places. — For the
composers see Eitner; than Grove, Diet, of Music and Musicians. 3 rd ed. Lond. 1928 and
Hawkins, A General Hist, of the science and practice of Music. 5 vol. Lond. 1776.

of the English fleet of the Queen Elizabeth over the Armada in the channel. Aug. 8 th 1588, the first
modern sea-battle, which was decided by the fire of the cannons.

lieben Spanier”.
