Passau • Cathedral ^ Dom
• The foundation-stone of the Cathedral of St. Stephan
at Passau was laid some time prior to 624. After the fire
of 1181 its reconstruction was begun in 1285 but could
only be completed in 1524. The building was again de-
stroyed by fire on two further occassions, in 1662 and
1682, and was re-built in elaborate Baroque style.
• The view of the choir and transept from the Residenz-
platz (with the Episcopal Place to the left) shows the
rieh late Gothic decoration, dating from the period of
reconstruction, 1407—1490, and manifesting Bohemian
influences in the high buttresses between which the oval
Baroque windows are visible.
• Editoriai Note. It may be pointed here that the Cathe-
drals of Germany fall naturally into three different cate-
gories, corresponding with the time of their construetion.
First the Romanesque Imperial Cathedrals of the Rhine,
of which that of Speyer, built by the German Emperors
of the 11 th Century, is the most imposing.
• Next come the Cathedrals and churches belonging to
the ecclesiastical Principalities and of which the period of
construetion Covers the whole period of the Middle Ages.
• Finally, during the hey-day and the final stage of
medieval times came the splendid Gothic Cathedrals,
which are a monument to the wealth and power of the
newly-risen middle-class, the burgers of the large towns.
• These three classes of German Cathedrals taken to-
gether crystalise the beauty and glamour of the entire
epoch of the Middle Ages.
A Der Passauer Stephansdom wurde vor 624 ge-
gründet. Nach einem großen Brande im Jahre
1181 wurde wieder mit dem Neubau begonnen,
der erst 1524 vollendet werden konnte. 1662
und 1682 zerstörten nochmals Brände den Bau,
der nun im reichen Barockstil erneuert wurde.
A Die Ansicht des Chores und Querschiffes vom
Residenzplatz aus mit dem Bischöflichen Palais
links zeigt die reiche spätgotische Dekoration
aus der Erbauungszeit von 1407 bis 1490.
A Redaktionsnotiz. Zusammenfassend sei zum
Schluß darauf hingewiesen, daß die deutschen
Dome ihrer Entstehung nach hauptsächlich in
drei Arten zerfallen. Einmal die romanischen
Kaiserdome am Rhein, deren gewaltigster der
von Speyer ist — er ist der größte deutsche im
Mittelalter vollendete Dom geblieben —, erbaut
von den Kaisern des 11. Jahrh. als Ausdruck
ihrer Herrlichkeit und als Symbol des Imperium.
A Dann über das gesamte Mittelalter sich er-
streckend die Kathedralkirchen an den Bischofs-
sitzen und zuletzt im hohen und ausgehenden
Mittelalter die großartigen gotischen Dome
städtisch bürgerlichen Gepräges,von dem Reich-
tum und dem Machtbewußtsein des neugewor-
denen und erblühten Standes der Bürger
zeugend.
