• An examination of the Output of contemporary
German handicraft reveals a uniform character
which is sometimes in sharp contrast with that of
the other European countries and of the United
States of America. This fact was brought out with
particular clearness at the recent International
Arts andCrafts Exhibition atMonza. In hardlyany
other country has the development of arts and
crafts in all their branches followed so straight
andlogical a line of direction ashas been the case
in Germany since the handicrafts revival which
set in at the beginning of the present Century.
• A sense of the highest quality in material, form
andtechnique; absolutemodernity(which implies
the elimination of all earlier forms which have

zeigt — bildet in sich eine geschlossene Einheit,

deren europäischen Staaten und auch Amerikas
abhebt. Fast in keinem anderen Lande ist seit
der Erneuerung um die Jahrhundertwende in
allen einzelnen Zweigen des Kunsthandwerks so
geradlinig und so konsequent vorgegangen wor-
den: Sinn für höchste Qualität in Stoff, Form und
Technik, somit Materialgerechtigkeit und Werk-
gerechtigkeit, dabei unbedingte Modernität, das
heißt Ablehnung aller leer gewordenen Formen
