• The traveller in Germany, no matter what region he
visits, encounters on every hand some new and striking
indication of the extraordinary wealth and variety of the
country's productive powers. In all parts of Germany are
to be found important centres of intellectual and artistic
life, and so powerful is the force and influence of these
nuclei that artistic and intellectual provincialism is non-
existent. A long struggle with scanty natural resources,
waged on a territory split into a multiplicity of political
unities, has shaped the German national character, and de-
veloped its creative forces; the influence of the economic
units of the old ecclesiastical and temporal dominions,
and that ofmunicipal organisations, such as the Hansa and
theGuilds has been active during all stages of progress.
A Wer in Deutschland reist, gleichviel in welcher Richtung,
der gewinnt Stunde um Stunde neue eigenartige Ein-
drücke, die einen ungewöhnlichen Reichtum und eine
wunderbare Mannigfaltigkeit der gestaltenden Kräfte
offenbaren. In allen Teilen Deutschlands gibt es Kristalli-
sationspunkte des geistigen und künstlerischen Lebens,
und die kulturelle Kraft, welche von all diesen Zentren aus-
strahlt, ist so stark, daß es in Deutschland weder eine künst-
lerische noch eine geistige Provinz gibt. Im Ringen mit einer
harten Natur und auf politisch zerklüftetem Boden hat sich
der Deutsche entwickelt und seine gestaltenden Kräfte ent-
faltet, immer eng verbunden mit der Wirtschaft kirchlicher
und fürstlicher Mächte oder bürgerlicher Organisationen,
wie sie die Hansa und die gewerblichen Zünfte bildeten.
