Crosstown traffic: contemplating mobility, interaction and migration among foragers and early farmers

ment base camps along the coastlines which are complemented by functional (seasonal) resource extraction camps in the interior and hin-
terlands (illustration on the bottom). This model applies mainly to the Danish coastlines. Johansen (2006) favours a model of cyclical rotation
between different settlement localities which can be used repeatedly over several years (illustration on the top). In the case of Schleswig-
Holstein, this explanation seems reasonable, but it remains unclear if there were solely inland based settlement systems of this type as well.
