Rimini is a little poor City ; yet the Country
is rich, and well till d. It was fortify d by Sigi ss
muni Pandolphus Malatessa ; but at present it has older than
only a Wall, and that in no good Condition. Rome, and
You know the Malateflas were formerly Lords of"'0 maae a
several places in this Province. The Bridge of
Marble, on which there are Two very entire In- before the
scriptions, by which it appears, that it was built B‘rlB °s
by Augussus and Tiberius, and the Triumphal-Arch
erected by Augusius, are the Two principal Mo-
numents of this City. There are allb to be seen,
the Ruines of an Amphitheater, behind the Gar-
den os the Capuchins. And Five hundred Paces
farther, without the City, there is a Tower os
Brick, which was the Pharos of the ancient Ha-
ven ; but the Sea is fallen back half a Mile from
this Place, and the Pharos is at present encompas- k
led with Gardens. P. Malatessa finifiied the De-
struciion of the Harbour, which was once ac-
counted one of the finest in Italy, to build the
Church of St. Francis, with the Pieces of Marble
which he took from thence. This Church, if it
were finilh’d, might pals for a fine Structure.
There they keep a Ffostre-tlame, which ibrves for
nothing but to bring Rain, or stop it, when
there is either too little or too much.
The Library of the Count de Gambalonga is ve-
ry numerous, but there are no Rarities in it, if
we may give credit to him who Ihowed it to us.
They made us observe, in the midst of the Mar-
ket-place, a kind of Marble-Pedestal, on which
thele words are Engraved: Caius Casar Dill. Ru-
bicone superato civili bell. Commilit. suos hie in soro Ar.
adlocutus. The Statue of Paul V. in Brass, is in
another open Place; and near to that a Marble-
Fountain os excellent Workmanstiip.
