T-yi A New Voyage Vol. I.
Corjica, who believed himself to have a greater
Privilege than others, about sixty Years ago, ob-
stinately rqsolv’d to see them, and that by a Di-
vine Judgment, he was presently struck with
sudden Death. It is true, so much Intercession
was made to this Saint, that a little after the Pre-
late came to Life again.
Near the Village of Pesignano, between Foligno
and Spoletto, and at the Foot of the Hill which
surrounds the Plain, a plentiful Spring runs out
of four Outlets under a Rock, and instantly makes
a little Lake. There the four Rivulets being uni-
ted, send forth a River, which afterwards forms
a vast number of Meanders; and doubtless con-
tributes very much to the fruitfulness as well ,as
Ornament of the Country it Waters. About
two hundred Paces from this Spring, there is on
the Way-sidc, a very little Temple of white
Marble, of the Corinthian Order. One who
seem’d to have seme skill in Antiquity, told me
at Spoktto, that this little River is the Clitumnus,
ipoken of by some ancient Authors, and among
* Hine albi others by * Virgil, in the Second Book of his
irrer-T&c Georgicks ■' And the Reasons alledged for this O-
Pelion seem very probable. But that which is
that the Oxen commonly added , that this little Temple was

Consecrated to Clitumnus, as a Deity, is a Story
without any appearance of Truth. For besides
that, this Temple is built Cross-wise, and Easi-
ward, as the most part of the Christian Churches
are; and that there are Crosses, and the Cy-
phers of the Name of Chriji in Bago Relievo,
in divers places, which agrees not with the
faihions of Paganism : The three following
Inscriptions are Engraved on the Frises of the
Front, and on both sides. (i) SOS Deus
Profetarum qui fecit Redemptlonem. (2) Deus An-
gelcrum qui secit Regtrreciicnem. (3) S C S
