Marble of Carrara. The Monks are magnificently
lodged ; every one has his Chamber, his Closet,
his Library, and his little Garden. The Prior’s
Apartment might well befit a Prince: There,
among other things, you may see the famous
Crucifix of Michael Angelo, drawn, as they say,
after the Life , from a certain Peasant
whom that Painter crucified for that purpose.
This Story has the Air of a Fable ; but here it
passes current for a certain Truth. This Picture
is upon Wood, and is not above half a Foot high.
I cbserved that the Crucisix holds his Head ex-
actly strait, which agrees not very well with the
Posture of a Man expiring on a Cross. They
have also a Saint Lawrence by Titian, and lome
Designs of Rubens and Albert Durer, which they
prize very highly.
The various Prospests which are discovered
srom this Ascent, strike the Beholder with Ad-
miration. You behold the Sea, and many I-
slands, among which are the Caprese, the famous
Seraglio of Tiberias. From thence you may di-
stindly view the Greatness, and Ground-Plot of
Naples, with its * Callies, Haven, Mole, and * He Cajlle os
Lanthorn. It is a pleasure to look on the Gar-the Egg.
dens which surround it, and the fruitful
which ascend to Campania the Happy. If you call $t. Elmo, in
your Eyes on the other side along the Sea-shore, the Cajile os
the small Bays or Creeks which reciprocally mix Eg»- there
with the little Capes, walked by that peacesul 4
Sea, and the pretty Villages with which the Magdalen,
Coast is strewed, make it a mod charming which carries
