Joseph ii designated the Sokal Monastery for dissolution. Thanks to the efforts
of the provincial superior of the Bernardines, Eukarpi Weigl, and the support
of the governor of Galicia, Józef Brigido, the decree of dissolution was repealed.
However, the Austrian authorities requisitioned the church argenteria on sev-
eral occassions (1793,1800,1807,1810).5 On 25 May 1843, a fire broke out in the
church. The flames consumed the miraculous painting, the entire interior, and
furnishings of the tempie, as well as the monastery Only the sacristy, the archive,
and the library survived the fire. The renovation works went on for many years.
On 8 September 1848, a new church was consecrated, and a new image of Our
Lady of Sokal was dedicated, but the effects of the fire were only completely
removed some years later by the guardian Anzelm Pizuński (guardian in Sokal
in 1855-1863). Alas, another fire, which broke out in 1870, consumed the newly
renovated tempie. During the restoration of the church over the next few years,
new furnishings were ordered in Munich.6 In 1951, after the change of the eastern
borders of Poland, the monastery was dissolved. The church eąuipment was taken
to Leżajsk, whereas the miraculous painting, library and archive were transported
to Kraków.7 In 2001, the Bernardines received a new post in Hrubieszów from
the Bishop of Zamość and Lubaczów, Jan Śrutwa. In the town that was located
relatively close to Sokal, they established a sanctuary of Our Lady of Sokal.8
In the Provincial Archives of the Bernerdine Monks in Kraków, there is a fas-
cicle with the reference number xxiv-c-4, consisting of loose files written in
Latin, Polish, and German. It was titled “Records of the Bernardine Church and
Monastery in Sokal”, and it covers the years 1599-1891. It features an inventory
from 1833 written in Polish by an unknown friar, entitled “Inwentarz kościoła
i konwentu sokalskiego XX. Bernardynów, jako też wszystkich budynków, grun-
tów, obligacji i rzeczy gospodarskich do tegoż klasztoru należących przeźrany
i spisany w roku 1833” [Inventory of the Church and Monastery of the Bernar-
dine Monks in Sokal, as well as all the buildings, lands, bonds and farmsteads
belonging to this monastery, written down in the year 1833] .9 Its author listed the
buildings of the church and monastery complex along with their eąuipment, and
the farm belonging thereto in a tabulated format (pp. 143-177). He described the
church, objects within the church, the sacristy, the monastery, the monastic cells,
the foresteria, the large and the smali refectory, the winę cellar, the kitchen and
the bakery, the outbuilding, the pantry, the bricklayers, carpenters, locksmitłis,
wheelwrighfs, and coopers workshops, the infirmary, the vault, the archive, the
