On 8 June 1901 in Kraków, Eligiusz Niewiadomski wrote, “several ‘hotheads’ [...]
caught on to an idea that art is morę than just paintings, and that it should not
be locked in an exhibition, but it [ought - A.W.] to be everywhere and with
everyone - throughout the whole fabric of life.”2 The said “hotheads,” including
Edward Trojanowski, Jerzy Warchałowski, Włodzimierz Tetmajer, Karol Tichy,
Józef Czajkowski and Stanisław Goliński, established the Polish Applied Art
Society (Towarzystwo Polska Sztuka Stosowana, or tpss for short). In the first
report from the activities of the Society, they indicated that its objective would
be to “awaken original creativity in the field of art applied to industry and con-
struction, and give it features of national distinctiveness, and at the same time,
to create the indispensable native atmosphere and artistic mood.”3
The tpss looked for the roots of Polishness, and at the same time sought
the sources of inspiration in several areas - folk art and crafts, wooden and
manor architecture, as well as in the old Polish artistic craftsmanship. The Society
saw the elusiveness of folk art, the disappearance of folk traditions, and the lack
of universal recognition thereof. Therefore, by organizing exhibitions, creating
a collection of folk crafts, and publishing their own journal, they madę efforts
to spread the passion for folk art and a conviction about its importance. Already
