CERAMIKA TYPU LOWER DANUBE KAOLIN WARES
(LDKW). DYSTRYBUCJA, DATOWANIE, FUNKCJA,
TYPOLOGIA, GENEZA, MIEJSCA PRODUKCJI*

Abstract: From many years and in many archaeological sites were found different types of
wares madę by kaolin elay. The pottery is very characteristic because the colour of the clay -
light brown, clay admbdures - sand, mica, feldspar, and shape - characteristic S-shape
bowls, jugs, mainly oinochoe and pots. It seems that this kind of pottery were used not only
like kitchen wares but like table wares, too. Because characteristic fabric the pottery were
given the name by us: LDKW - Lower Danube Kaolin Wares. This kind of wares were
found on the many sites along Danube from Aquincum till the Danube delta, but main point
of concentration is in Moesia Inferior, specially on the territory of modern Dobruja.
Chronology of this wares seems elear. The earliest examples have occurred in the mid of the
2nd century, and latest one of the beginning of the 4th century. This kind of pottery was
most popular from the second part of the 3rd century till the beginning of the 4th century.
Epigones are dated even for the 6th century. LDKW pottery is were freąuently found in
many lower Danube site, mainly military sites, like legionary fortress and fortresses.
Comparison of Chemical analysis madę us prove that main centre/centres of production
should be in Moesia Inferior. But till the 2007 these centres were unknown.
Investigations produced the conseąuence that pottery workshop should be localised in
eastern part of Moesia Inferior, because in this area were found kaolin bed - known from
the ancient times. Now we are prove that main centre of production was territory around
ancient Axiopolis (modern Cernavoda in Romania). It was the place known from
Alexander the Great times, in roman times there was important crossroad, ancient river
port and important ąuarries. So, we could said now, that we had resolved the problem of
typology, chronology and place(s) of production this new - for many archaeologist - type
of roman wares.
Key: Lower Danube, new type of pottery (LDKW), pottery production centers.
