It is of the Doric order, and formed of 34 blocks of
marble, being practicable by means of a staircase of 182
steps which leads to the summit occupied by the sta-
tue of St. Peter by T. della Porta, and from which
we enjoy a beautiful view. Near the column we see
also some remains of the basilica and of the temple
of Trajan. On this Piazza there is also the
Church of S. Maria di Loreto of octagonal
form, designed by Ant. da S. Gallo. By either of the
two streets on the right of this church we arrive at
the Piazza dei Ss. Apostoli, where we find the
Palazzo Colonna (no. 66). The ground floor
was painted by Tempesta, Poussin, Pomarancio and
D'Arpino, etc. The beautiful gallery, divided into five
rooms, is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays,
from 11 to 3. The many fine works which it contains
are by the first masters, viz: Fil. Lippi, Botticelli,
Luini, il Canaletto, Guido, l'Albano, it Passignano,
il Parmigiano, Rubens, Van Dyck, Tiziano, An-
nibale Caracci and many others. The principal are.
