Church of Ss. Apostoli (Piazza of the same
name), supposed to have been erected by Constantine;
it was rebuilt from the design of Fontana, except
the portico which was done by order of Sixtus IV.
The upper part of the facade is by Valadier (1827).
Under the portico there is an eagle in bas-relief which
once was part of the Arch of Trajan, and opposite is
the monument of « Volpato » by Canova. The interior
is of three aisles with pilasters of the Corinthian order;
on the ceiling is the triumph of the Order of St. Francis
painted by Baciccio. In the second chapel to the
right (modern) the picture of the Conception is by
F. Coghetti, and the two statues by Morani and Ro-
versi. In the chapel of St. Anthony, the picture of
the altar is by Ben. Luti. The picture of the High-
Altar, representing the Saints Philip and James, is by
D. Muratori. Of the two tombs, by the sides of the
tribune, that on the right of Cardinal Riario was de-
signed by Michelangelo. Over the door of the sa-
cristy is the tomb of Clement XIV. by Canova. The
monument of Lucretia Rospigliosi is by Ludovisi;
that of Philip Colonna and his wife by Pozzi. In
the cloister there are several monuments, amongst
which is the cenotaph in memory of Michelangelo,
who was buried here before he was taken to Florence.
The excavation made in this church, in restoring it,
brought to light two urns which contain the bodies
of the Apostles St. Philip and St. James the Less.
The relics are exposed to the public on the first of May.
