On the Origins of the Sarcophagi of King Sigismund III Vasa and Queen
Constance of Austria. Contribution to the History of Gdańsk Pewtersmiths

In the 16th and 17th centuries Gdańsk was one of the biggest craft centers in the
Republic of Poland. One of the crafts especially well developed was pewtery, which
was confirmed by the fact that in pewterers workshops such voluminous items like
sarcophagi were being purchased. The sarcophagi were decorated with relief, carvings,
engravings and most often also polychrome. Among others, the sarcophagi of Polish
kings and queens (today in the Royal Vault of the Wawel Cathedral) are considered
to be made in Gdańsk. Although historians and art historians harmoniously confirm
the origin of the royal sarcophagi, in only two cases (the sarcophagi of King Sigismund
Augustus and King Stephen Bathory) their provenance is proved with pewterers’
marks and written documents. The Gdańsk provenance of the other royal sarcophagi
was established through the analysis of style. However, there are documents that con-
firm that two more royal pewter coffins were made in Gdańsk - the sarcophagi of
