Slade scholars, Professors, High-Art dilettante,

Up -with your polemics, if not with your fisties,

In defence of San Marco against thebirbante,

The Brigands, the Yandals, the Goths, the Boeotians,
Who- come, forth to destroy on pretence to restore
And whose sinister interests or Philistine notions
May soon flay San Marco from finial to floor !

They may tell you their aim’s but to fix his.foundations,

To stay what is sinking, make good what is gone:.

Gammon ! That’s hut to mask their accurst operations ;

You judge what they tvill do, hy what they have done.

Or if your sharp eye on these jobbers and Yandals i

Have put spokes in their wheels, their profane hands have stayedy j
The virtue’s not theirs, but your vigilant candles’, :

The light they have thrown, and the noise you have made!
