ZAKOŃCZENIE

Teza o istnieniu „gdańskiej szkoły architektury" okazuje się w perspektywie przytoczonych faktów
zasadna. Wspólnym punktem odniesienia dla grupy objętej tym terminem była wiara w istnienie ponadcza-
sowych reguł projektowania oraz możliwość ich wyabstrahowania ze studiów nad architekturą dawną. Kon-
serwatywna misja, zaprogramowana u zarania Oddziału, została podjęta przez określoną politykę personalną
oraz nawiązanie do teorii Ostendorfa. Wspólne wystąpienia Oddziału i uczestnictwo jego przedstawicieli
w tworzeniu urbanistycznego i architektonicznego obrazu miasta pod koniec lat 20. i na początku kolejnej
dekady stanowiły - jak można wnioskować na podstawie dotychczasowych badań - apogeum owego pro-
cesu. W teorii i praktyce Oddziału Architektury uwidoczniły się wówczas wszystkie aspekty, które na
początku moich rozważań zostały uznane za cechy strukturalne uczelni. W działaniach Oddziału zrealizowały
się nic tylko narodowo-polityczne dążenia nowo powstałej WST, ale działalność Kloeppela udzieliła wspar-
cia regionowi - jednak w zupełnie inny sposób, niż planowano w momencie powoływania uczelni - nie
przez jego rozwój gospodarczy, lecz podniesienie znaczenia w kontekście niemieckiej polityki narodowej
i udowodnienie jej rzekomej przynależności do Rzeszy Niemieckiej. Dyskusja nad rozwojem centrum Gdań-
ska i późniejsza Rekonstrukcja dawnego oblicza Gdańska świadczą natomiast o opiniotwórczej roli Oddziału
Architektury WST w samym mieście.

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE AT THE FORMER HIGHER TECHNICAL SCHOOL IN GDANSK

(1904-1945). STRUCTURE, TEACHERS, IDEAS

Abstract

The Highcr Tecłmical School was established in 1904 in Gdansk and existed to 1945, when it was transformed into the Gdansk
University of Technology. Since the very beginning the School had a department of architecture. The Department, together with its
members, teachers and students, is still little known. The présent article focuses on the history of the Department, starting off from
the posit that it was characterised by différent attitude towards architecture which allows us to put forward the hypothesis of the
"Gdansk school of architecture". An important stimulus for its establishment was provided already during the initial discussion about
the formation of the department, when it was said that due to the historical substance of Gdansk buildings, architecture should be
taught from an artistic angle. This idea and the views of Friedrich Ostcndorf who in 1904 was appointed professor of Médiéval
architectural design at the Department could be regarded as the starting point for the Department's tradition which for décades was
developing - through right personal policy and curriculum - the basis for learning architecture in Gdansk. An important point of
référence was the belief that there existed timeless rules of planning and designing and it was possible to isolate them from the stud-
ies of old architecture. The participation of the Department members in the création of urban and architectural landscape of the city
at the end of the 1920s and in the beginning of the 1930s marked - as could be concluded from the research conducted so far - the
culmination of the process. At that lime, opinions of the Department members, especially of Otto Kloeppel who was a lecturer there,
became increasingly politicised and historical architectural research was used to political purposes, as arguments for eternal German
character of the city of Gdansk. The "Reconstruction of the Old Face of Gdansk" began in 1934 under the leadership of Kloeppel
could be regarded as a model réalisation of those views. It shows the opinion-forming role played by the Department of Architecture
of the Higher Technical School in the city itself.
