HARVESTING IN IRAN
39
An old man from a group of harvesters a little
way from the Barbad group was summoned to
sharpen the Mangal. Standing with his knees
bent the old man demonstrated how he sharpened
the edge. He levelled the blade to his right knee,
with the edge turned forward, and the handle of
the sickle in his left hand. Only the outer 10-15
cm of the edge were filed. The file was held at
right angles to the blade and was moved quickly
sideways on the upper side from the tip to the
point where the blade touched his knee (fig. 12).
Then he treated the inner part of the edge in
nearly the same way, except that he now moved
the blade quickly at right angles to the file and
kept the file still (fig. 13). The burr which devel-
oped on the lower side of the edge was removed
with a few strokes of the file, to complete the
operation.
The large sickle, Mangal, was locally made by
smiths, and it was not obtainable in the Bazaar in
Sirjan. On the other hand the smaller sickle,

the grain and is going to grasp the bundle with his
left hand. The points of “Nakhonij” are seen. At
Barbad.
