Tommerby, plough9
K-599 330 ± 100 before 1950
1620 A.D.
Wood of oak from fragment of a plough found
before 1888 in a bog by Tommerby, Tern parish,
Skanderborg county, Jutland. It is a fragment of
a wheel plough. Previously dated by pollen ana-
lysis of the peat deposits to Pre-Roman Iron
Age. The wood had been treated with preserva-
tives, and before dating the sample was treated as

K-599 A lignin-fraction 370 ± 100 before 1950

Lundgaardshede, yoke

Wood of maple from a draught yoke for oxen,
found by peat cutting in a depression in a bog,
Bredmose at Lundgaardshede, Gammelstrup par-
ish, Viborg county, Jutland. Found together with
other, not preserved, wooden objects. It is un-
known when the use of ox-yokes began in Den-
mark, and no safely datable yokes have previously
been found. Collected 1947. Submitted 1961 by
Skive Museum, Denmark.
The yoke had been treated with linseed oil prior
to dating. The sample was therefore split in two
halves, and cellulose and lignin were isolated as
described in K-599. Their fractions were dated
separately with the following results:
