Notes
1. The subject is also treated in the rotaprint publi-
cation REL 1968: 1. A report on the experiments
at the Historical-Archaeological Research Centre,
Lejre. Lejre 1969.

2. The first report of the Hendriksmose ard was given
to the 6th International Congress of Anthropolo-
gical and Ethnological Sciences in Paris 1960
(Steensberg, 1963).
3. The expenses were paid by the “Hjerl Hede
Foundation”.
4. After the establishment of the “Historical-
Archaeological Research Centre” in 1964 in Lejre
c. 40 km west of Copenhagen a permanent field
became available for experimental activities. The
expenses of the Centre were generously covered
by the Carlsberg Foundation.
5. These testings will appear in an article by F.
Sach: Ubersicht der Entwicklung der Bodenbe-
arbeitung in Bohmen und Mahren. The article
should be published in 1969 in Dr. I. Balassa’s
book: Getreidebau in Ost- und Mitteleuropa.
6. Many persons and institutions have been involved
in the experiments, but in interpreting the evidence,
the experience gained by H. Vensild in the exca-
vation of prehistoric furrows in Store Vildmose
has been useful.
7. In Sach’s terminology “reversely bent single stilt
in implements of Dostrup type”.
8. In Sach’s terminology “type with passing through
stilt, Dostrup type”.
9. In Sach’s terminology “heavily slanting position
to the earth for the ard head”.
10. The yoke from Dejbjerg bog was published in
“Aarboger for Nordisk Oldkyndighed og Histo-
ric” 1900, p. 222-234, fig. 5.
11. The Swedish “sla ag”-type is treated by J. Gran-
lund in “Oxen, oket och Smalanningen” in Hyl-
ten-Cavallius Fbreningens Yearbook 1943, Vaxjb
1944, fig. 19, p. 173-174.
12. Feeding of the oxen during 3 winters cost Danish
Crowns: 6.000. At least 250 hour’s training with
one labourer cost Danish Crowns: 3.400. It
would have paid to buy full-grown oxen instead,
and to hitch them to the ard after 30-60 days of
intensive training. In this connection contact has
been made with one of the last farmers in Scan-
dinavia who still uses oxen for draught, Ragnar
Nilsson, Alvidsjb, Lbttorp, Oland, Kalmar Lan,
Sweden.
