Getreidebau in Ost-undMitteleuropa, ed. I. Balassa
(Corn-growing in East- and Middle-Europe) Aka-
demiai Kiado, Budapest 1972. 653 pp.
Dr. Ivan Balassa, deputy director of the illustrious
Hungarian Museum of Agriculture, has edited a
collection of articles written by specialists on agri-
culture from the clearing of the ground and tilling
by the plough, to the harvesting, winnowing and
storing of the agricultural products. The preparatory
work of this book has been in progress over ten
years. Through Dr. Balassa’s competence and in-
exhaustible energy the work has been completed
so far. Unfortunately no contributions arrived from
Austria, the SSSR and the Ukraine. The book is
full of new information and a key for Western
scholars to the treasures of the eastern part of
Europe is now before us.
Dr. Balassa’s excellent introduction to the sub-
ject is followed by a contribution by his learned
colleague, Dr. I. Welhnann, on the agrarian econo-
my and field systems of the great Hungarian plain
in the early 18th century, and by Dr. T. Hoffmann,
on the period of land-reforms. M. K. Gegeschidse
of Tblissi (Tiplis) writes on land-improvement by
irrigation in Georgia. A. Lewicka contributes an
interesting article on slash-and-burn in the Polish
Carpathian Mountains, supplemented by Jan Po-
dolak’s treatise on the same topic at the Slovakian
side of the border. The late Professor M. Filipovic
concludes this part of the book writing on the till-
ing of virgin soils, cultivation of swampy grounds,
fallowing, and slash-and-burn in Yugoslavia.
From p. 205 to p. 528 the subject is the class-
ification and use of agricultural implements. Two
articles on harvesting and harvesting implements
by I. Balogh of Debrecen and L. Takacs of Buda-
pest maintain the same high standard. The final
article E. Fuzes is concerned with the storing of
grain in the southern part of the Carpathian region.
Dr. Balassa completes this large volume with a
list of terms in Armenian, Azerbajzanian, Bjelo-
russian, Bulgarian, Moldavian, Polish, Serbocroa-
tian, Slovakian, Czech, Turkish and Hungarian as
well as a general register. A list of contents may
