the same as another all over the greater part
of the country; the lengthwise-bearing
wooden axles were somewhat bent in order
to make it easier to pile up the stones (fig. 23,
24). This type of stone wagon was used
during the last stage of stone clearing, until it
was replaced by the tractor.
In our own time such means of transpor-
tation disappear. When stone clearing occa-
sionally was to be carried out in some places
later, it was done by special clearing
machines and power-drive tractors were also
used for lifting the stones (Jonsson 1971,
76f.). Whilst these machines were working
productively in some places to increase the
arable area, the earlier cleared ground else-
where was now being deserted, in spite of

the heroic efforts once made to create culti-
vated ground.
The main purpose of this paper is to give a
preliminary survey of the problems of stone-
bound ground in Sweden, mainly from the
point of view of organisation and technique.

Es ist der Hauptzweck dieses Artikels, eine
vorlaufige Ubersicht uber die Probleme des stei-
nigen Bodens in Schweden unter dem Gesichts-
winkel der Organisation und Technik zu geben.
Es war allgemein bekannt, dab gewisse Arten
von Steinen die Fahigkeit hatten, Minerale zu
