between the cross fastenings, whereas at
least one of the boles of the Viborg harrow
has a length with 7 tines with no indication
of any cross-fastenings. The Viborg harrow
is most likely to have been of the medieval
harrow type, the single-frame stiff harrow.
The similarity between the 1st century
(Dorregeest), 9th century (Viborg) and early
19th century West European harrows is
striking. This, allied to the similar wear
marks of the tines, makes the interpretation
of the Viborg tool fragments as a harrowing
implement very cogent.
The whole question of harrow-types in
medieval and later times, and of the associ-
ated kinds of harness and of draught-ani-
mals, will be taken up and discussed in
forthcoming articles in Tools and Tillage.
Eine danische Egge aus der
Wikingerzeit
In Tools and Tillage 1980 wurde die Radiokar-
bondatierung einer in Viborg in Danemark gefun-
denen Egge publiziert. Die Datierung ergab 830
n.Ch. ± 100 Jahre, d.h. danische Wikingerzeit.
Als die Egge 1976 gefunden wurde, war sie ein
Teil einer Brunnenkonstruktion (Abb. 1). In
Abb. 3 sieht man die erhalten gebliebenen Stiicke,
die Teile der Eggenbalken mit einigen noch daran
festsitzenden Zinken sind. Die Egge von Viborg
wird mit einem Fund ahnlicher Eggenbalken, die
1941 in Dorregeest,Gemeinde Uitgeest in der
Provinz Nordholland ans Licht gebracht wurden,
verglichen. Dieser Fund wurde neu datiert in das
Jahr 95 n.Chr. ± 60 Jahre. Die Verschleifispuren
an den Zinken der Eggen von sowohl Viborg als
auch Dorregeest ahneln denen, die man von
holzernen Eggen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert kennt
(Abb. 5). Die Eggszene des Bayeux-Teppichs, ein
rbmisches Eggenmodell in Kbln und die vermut-
lichen Eggspuren aus der Wikingerzeit in Lind-
holm Hoje werden erwahnt. Spatere Typen von
Eggen und spateres Eggen werden in kommenden
Nummern von Tools and Tillage behandelt
werden.

The Dorregeest boles do not necessarily need
to come from one and the same harrow (Van
der Poel 168).
4. It was originally dated by the radiocarbon
method to 1680 ± 60, i.e. 270 A.D. Later
many of the early Groningen datings have had
to be re-dated (Van der Poel p. 167 note 6 and
Radiocarbon 1965 GRO no. 1171), which
means that the new radiocarbon dating of the
Dorregeest harrow is 1920 ± 60 years B.P.
This is 30 A.D. uncalibrated and 95 A.D.
calibrated. Unfortunately U. Bentzien in his
recent book retains the old dating, though it is
still Roman Iron Age (Bentzien 1980, 38).
