A.

ACADEMY is an inftitution for the readier in-
ftruclion of ftudents in the principles of the va-
rious branches of Art. This feerns to have been its ori-
ginal defignation ; but as many of the principles of art
require the elucidation of a liberal mind, and extenfive
knowledge, it became neceffary that thefe fhould be
communicated by proficients in technical fiudies. Hence
an academy is now a confiderable inftitution ; and mould
comprize, (i.) a number of teachers, each excellent in
his department, whofe leffons may direct the ftudent ;
and (2.) conveniencies for accommodating the ftudies
of thofe who are defirous of applying to praclife the
leffons taught.

Almoft all the metropolitan cities of Europe (and
fome of the fecond rate) have now academies ; at Rome,
almoft each nation has its appropriate academy,
