lead pencil, and fuch marks or notes infer ted, as may
allure a recollection of the colours, zntipecidia* In fact,
this is a moft ufeful companion ; as, without prepara-
tion, or lofs of time, it fecures hints fufficient for fu-
ture reflections, and fervice. Thefe fhould always be
tranfcribed into colours as foon as may be, while the
memory retains the ideas with certainty.

The beft time for ftudy has been faid to be the
evening, during twilight, for general light; becaufe
not only the light is more equally difFufed, than in the
fharp light of the fun, but alfo the effects are warm-
er than in the morning twilight, whofe frejhnejs is
peculiar to itfelf. All times of the year, or of the day,
are belt as they are moft applicable to the bufinefs in
hand. Studies by night are rather meditations, or re-
marks, than ftudies.

STUDIED is fpoken of a picture, when it has
throughout, the air of exact refemblance to nature, when
its parts are accurate in form, and effect, and the whole
is carefully completed and finifhed.

STATUE is a reprefentation in fculpture, of a
figure, which fhould be ftanding, (from the Latin
Jlare, to ftand) but the term is applied to figures in any
attitude.

The Greek ftatues are generally naked, and of
beautiful proportions.

The Roman ftatues are generally clothed, and from
their dreffes, receive a variety of names, as Confular3
Imperial, &c.

Curular ftatues, are figures feated in chairs.

Allegorical ftatues, are virtues, vices, rivers?
