Taste is fometlmes ufed in the fame fenfe as man-
ner ; for the peculiar touch, colouring, drawing, &c^
of any mafter, or fchool : and is either natural to an
artift, and good, or bad, according to his views of na-
ture, and objects of ftudy: or artificial; the refult of
education and ftudy. Tafte is alfo national", every nation
having a character peculiar to itfelf, in its works of
art, which, more or lefs, adheres to the manners of the
artifts of that nation.

TEAZED is fpoken of colours, which inftead of
being laid on, and imparted to the canvas at once, are
too much worked about, whereby they lofe their bril-
liancy, and juft effect. This over care, and want of
determinate handling, is injurious to all colours, but
efpecially to the lighter.

TENDER colours are thofe of lighter hues, and
beft adapted for diftances, &c. where forcible colours
would be improper.

TENDER manner, confifts in a certain fweet,
and foft union, of agreeable and pleafant colours ; it
rejects all fudden and harm pafTages from colour to
colour; or from light to fhade ; and delights in har-
monious degradations, and demi-tints.

TERM, is a ftatue, whofe upper part reprefents a
human figure, and the lower part ufually ends ftrait:
or, with mouldings, and fometimes (but rarely) with feet
only. They were ufed anciently to mark the bounda-
ries of lands, &c. whence they were called termini; 01
from the god Terminus, who was thus reprefented.

Terms, as ornaments, are ufually employed in gar-
dens,
