UNITED is defcriptive of pictures, wherein1 arc
applied in a happy manner, the principles of union:
wherein the whole feems to be done by the fame artift,
on the fame principles, with the fame palette, with
equal pleafurej vigour of mind, and attention.

WORKS are the productions of any particular maf-
ter ; as we fay fuch an one's works, &c.

Great works are thofe performances which
occupy extenfive fpaces in churches, halls, &c. but
fometimes the epithet great h ufed to works, as figni-
sficative of abundant merit.

Work alfo fometimes denotes the manner of work-
manfhip, as mofaic works, &c.

WHOLE TOGETHER, is taken as expreffive of
the effect of the parts in producing a whole : and in this
fenfe it is nearly equivalent to union ; but it fometimes
is alio taken to mean, that although a piece may be in
fome refpeefs deficient, or fmaller errors may have
crept in, yet - upon the whole, or take the whole to-
gether, it is good.
