Plate IV.

In this figure are difplayed the principles of variety
in attitude, as imparting graceful fway,.eafy motion,
and contraft in the inclining poife of the body. Thus
when the face is fronting, the body is turned fomewhat
fideways, and the legs fronting, &c. alfo when one
moulder rifes, the other finks ; the hips, knees and feet
the fame : as in this figure, i. fhews the motion of the
head ; 2> the rifing of one fhoulder; 3. the rifmg of the
oppofite hip; 4. the rifing of the contrary knee, &c»
by a kind of alternation. If this figure were viewed
fideways, it would appear that the fame principle at-
tended it: whatever part projects, a correfpondent
part retires.

Plates V. and VI.

Are fix figures, fhewing a variety of attitude to the
fame intent. The idea is merely a figure in a cumbent
attitude, holding a tablet for an infcription, yet the pof-
tures are not like each other, and might be yet further
varied at the choice of the artifh
