Geometry

assisting

Perspective.

The leading ideas of pi£r.urefque Perspective*
depend on the relation of planes to each other; and
as the planes lnoft ufeful to art in this ftudy, are the
horizontal, and the vertical, thefe employ the attention
as well of the instructor, as of the learner/ in this defign.
The level, and the plumb line, are here reprefentative j
of thefe two principal planes -3 the former is held in the
hand by Per.spec.tive, who looks along it ; while
Geometry, by fufpending the plummet, evinces its
perpendicularity to the level, and with her compaffes, is
engaged in meafuring the bearings of fuch angles as are
requiiitc : Perspective holds in her other hand the
pallette, and pencils, as ready to apply thefe principles
to pra&ice,' and to improve by the knowledge ac-
quired from her informant.

The principles which have been adduced in the
Lectures on this fubjecl:, are fo intimately connected
with the idea of this engraving, that no further eluci-
dation is neceffary to whoever has diligently perufecl
thefe difcourfes.
