Bibliography: George Grosz, as above, no 4, repr. 3.
Tbis watercolour belongs to a type of street scenes characteristic for Grosz's work of tbe early
twenties. Tbeir main defining traits are: a vertical composition and a multitude of human figures
burrying in various directions and seen from a comparatively close distance, so that the figures
on the foreground are freąuently cut by the lower edge of the composition.

Analogies to this watercolour may be found in the years 1922 to 1924. By its composition,
its colour and the way of painting by soft, fluid splashes it recalls works from 1922 reproduced
in the album Ecce Homo such as: the drawing Germans, the watercolour Before sunset as well as the
drawing Types5 dated 1924. The figurę of the man with a brief-case on the foreground has
close affinities in some of the works dated 1923, such as the lithograph Democracy on Kurftir-
stendamm from the series Thieves (Die Rauber) and drawings: United front from the series Judg-
ment shall come (Abrechnung folgt) and Men of money.'' Nevertheless the treatment of such
details as the tiny veins on the cheeks of the men encourages to approach the date of the exe-
cution of this watercolour rather to the year 1922.
