The rigid supports aie not meant to live an existence of their own, because they are not allowing
enough „air" around the painting and they are also giving the disturbing effeet of, more or
less, a hox of irregular shape. But they are so adjusted, with a margin of a few centimeters left
all around and enough space allowed for the basie missing parts (head, feet, nimbus), that a tem-
porary display in this state is possible.
The arguments for this technical solution are the following: (1) the reduction of the rigid
support to the smallest possible size makes easy all matters of handling, operating, etc, (2) it
would be extremely difficult to adjust the painting in the right position an a rectangular support
without the possibility of observing the effect (the painting is face down), (3) a fragment nicely
