1. Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, Rocky Landscape with Figures,
Warsaw, Muzeum Narodowe
One of the disregarded works of this master was Rocky Landscape with Figures (fig. 1), origi-
nating from Adam Sapieha's collection in Cracow; this painting has been attributed until recently
to Salvator Rosa.3 This attribution was in fact justified by a striking resemblance of the picture
to the works of the Italian master. The authorship has been established by the signature di-
scovered in the course of the restoration: Dietricy 1754.
Dietrich had )ived in Italy in the years 1743 to 1744 and by then he presumably became
acquainted with the paintings by Salvator Rosa and started imitating them. However, after
his return from Italy he continued to recur often to the style of the prominent Italian. This
was reflected, among others, in the Warsaw painting (fig. 1) as well as in the Rocky Landscape
