presumably, for the graphic artist Johann Georg Wille.8 An entry of 29th June 1761 in the latter's
diary says that he gave Zing a Dietrich's painting in order to make a print; this Dietrich's picture
showing Des bergers qui sont sorlis de bains was the first one he received from the master.9 As
Michael Levey correctly suggests Zing's engraving repeats the composition of that very pain-
ting.10 As this engraving is identical in all details with our painting showing Nymphs in a Rocky
Grotto (fig. 4), there arises the problem of the correlation of these two works. The reversed compo-
sition of the engraving allows an assumption that the Warsaw picture might have been its
model.11
A pendant to the above described painting is Nymphs in a Landscape (fig. 3). This work
seems to be related with Wille's no te of 6th June 1761 on despatching to Dietrich the measu-
