Tements of the first painting which he had done for him (it is to be nnderstood that the painting
in ąuestion is Des bergcrs qui sont sortis de bains), with the request for painting a pendant.12
In the further records of the diary the author never mentions whether Dietrich had carried
•out that order. The existence of such a pendant in the "Warsaw collection seems to clarify the
-question. We do not know, on the other hand, if the painting had reached the customer.

Wandering Musicians13 (fig. 6) is a version of Dietrich's painting in the National Gallery
in London (fig. 7).14 The connection between this composition and the works of Adriaen van
Ostade had been discovered long ago.15 As M. Levey suggests, in this case an unknown painting
by Ostade, recorded by Hofstede de Groot (No. 433) might have been a model for Dietrich;
