Portraits of tlie Potocki Family1
In 1819 when Gottfried Schadow was at the height of his fame the sculptor's son, Wilhelm
Schadow, a painter (1788 —1862), arrived in Berlin and was immediately appointed a Professor
of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. Wilhelm has studied at first with G. F. Weitsch, and in
his young days he was influenced hy his father and by Wilhelm Wach. Educated in that way,
he left for Korne in 1811, where he spent several years and this stay was an important factor
which formed his art and his ideas. It was in 1813 that he joined there the German St. Lukę
Brotherhood, called „the Nazarenes". Then also, following the cxfmple of Overbeck, eqnal
with him in age, his friend and master, Schcdow became converted to Catholicism. He has
grown to be a hot-eyed Nazarene, sharing ideals and principles with his fellow-artists, Overbeck,
