INGVAR ERIK BERGSTRÖM
1913-1996

The most eminent art historian and connoisseur of European still life
painting. He achieved his doctor’s degree at the University of Gothenburg in
1947 under the guidance of prof. Axel L. Romdahl. In the years 1937-46 an
assistant at the Röhss Museum of Arts and Crafts in Gothenburg; 1947-58 an
assistant professor of art history at the University of Gothenburg; 1958-80
research professor. He had his personal impact on the shape of the two
institutions very important for European art history: Rijksbureau voor
Kunsthistorische Documentatie in the Hague and the Sir Robert Witt Library
in London. Decorated with Royal Swedisch Order of the North Star, Gold
medal for service to Sweden, Order of Orange-Nassau, King Haakon Cross
of Liberty. A member of many scientific societies, he also actively participated
as a chef in the Cuisine Culinaire Nederland.

Lor more then the last decade he visited Warsaw regularly, twice a year,
devoting his time to the National Museum in Warsaw and other Warsaw
collections. Always ready to give advice, to share information, to help. He
brought hope and sunshine to sometimes dull or frustrating moments, with
the class difficult to find in the present world.
