The Collections of Byzantine Art:

24 items of Orthodox art, including triptychs and quadriptychs, enamel crosses
and icons, were delivered in 1997 by the Prosecutor’s Office of the Warsaw
region.

The Collections of European Art:

Franz Knebel (1809-1887), The Forum Boarium with the Temple of Hercules
Victor in Rome, signed bottom left: F. Knebel fee., on the right Rom 1872,
oil on canvas, 70.5cm x 105cm, purchased in 1996, inv. no. M.Ob.2519.
A painting by the Swiss painter and draftsman, known primarily for his
watercolour views of Italy and Rome. The work is an important supplement
to the collection of German and Austrian artists active in Rome in the mid-19th
century.

The Collections of Polish Art:

Józef Chelmonski (1849-1914). On the Frontier (A Souvenir from a Voyage to
Ukraine), 1877, oil on canvas, 100 x 187cm, signed bottom left: Józef
Chelmonski I Paris 1877 “Souvenir d’un Voyage en Ukraine”. The painting was
created during the artist’s stay in Paris, the period of his best work. It was
purchased in 1878 from Goupil, Chelmohski’s exclusive dealer in Paris, by an
American collector. It remained in American hands until 1996, when it was
bought and then deposited by the purchaser in the National Museum in
Warsaw.

Wladyslaw Czachórski (1850-1911), Juliet’s Funeral, 1874, oil on cardboard,
15.5cm x 33cm, signed bottom right: Czachórski 1874Monachium-, purchased
in 1996, inv. no. MP 5263. This is a sketch for an unfinished composition
based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, executed during the period when
the artist was working on the monumental The Actors Before Hamlet, which
won him acclaim and a gold medal at the International Exhibition of Art in
Munich in 1874.
