penances and self-mortification, “which are pain-
ful, vain, and useless.” It was summed up under
eight heads, and the reformer adhered to these
principlesand taught them to his disciples till the
end of his life. They were
(1) “Right beleif
(2) Right actions
(3) Right aims
(4) Right speech.
(5) Right means of livelihood,
(6) Right endeavour.
(7) Right mindfulness.
(8) Right meditation.”
This 'noble eightfold path/ which defies, and
stands alone against, all the so-called righteous
principles of the latter-day creeds, was founded
upon four fundamental truths.
