versa! love’—This was his discovery ; and this is
the begining, the middle, and the end of
Buddhism. It is a religion, to use the words
of Sir Edwin Ar sold “ which has in it the eternity
of a universal hope, the immortality of a bound-
less love, an indestruct ible element of faith in
final good, and the proudest assertion ever made
of human freedom.”
“ The power and sublimity of Gautuma’s origi-
naldoctrines should be estimated by their influence,
not by their interpreters.”
Buddha’s fame now reached the ears of Seniya
Bimbisara who most respectfully invited him to
Rajagriha, the then Capital of his Kingdom,
Magadh. The Blessed One accepted the invita-
tion and with his new disciples and a thousand
followers went to the Capital.
There they stayed in a pleasant grove and
the king “ surrounded by a number of Brahmans
and Vaisyas, went to visit Buddha.” Both Kas-
yapa and Buddha were household names in the
town, and on seeing the great Brahman there the
king could not understand which was the master,
