It is a question which may justly puzzle
even the most calm and sober thinker.
Transmigration without soul has no root, as
Soul without transmigration has no fruit.
None can deny that the great Buddha
believed in a soul, unless and until he denies
that he believed in a theory of Metempsycho-
sis. The two are very indispensibly com-
bined; and it is nothing short of impudence
to attribute such a poor want of insight to a
‘unique man’ who occupies the highest niche
in the great Pantheon of the World’s Epoch
makers.

is to be found in many a book on ancient
-Hindu Religious Philosophy, and was not pure-
ly an invention of the Buddha. But it had not
received a universal application and a
thorough explanation at the hands of the
